When a discoid meniscus is causing pain, popping, or other symptoms, however, your orthopedic surgeon will probably recommend arthroscopic surgery. Surgical Treatment Knee arthroscopy is one of the most commonly performed orthopaedic surgical procedures.
When a discoid meniscus is causing pain, popping, or other symptoms, arthroscopic surgery is … MATERIAL AND METHODS: Knee MR examinations of 53 children and 84 adults who had discoid lateral menisci identified at arthroscopic surgery were retrospectively evaluated with consensus by two radiologists for tear type including displacement of torn meniscus. MRI findings were compared with surgery as the reference standard. discoid meniscus is thicker than normal, and often oval or disc-shaped. It is more prone to injury than a normally shaped meniscus. Some people with discoid meniscus may go through their entire lives and never experience any problems. Many people, however, will have knee problems related to the discoid meniscus.

Sometimes repairs (suturing/stitching) of meniscus is necessary to correct the meniscus, and this can only be assessed during surgery. In some cases the entire meniscus needs to be excised due to UN repairable damage to the meniscus. Symptomatic discoid meniscus is managed surgically with knee arthroscopic meniscus saucerization (reshaping meniscus to normal shape and size) and meniscus fixation if unstable. Any associated meniscus tears are managed accordingly with either repair or partial meniscectomy depending on the tear type.

Ultrasonographic imaging of the menisci may demonstrate a wide and irregularly shaped lateral discoid meniscus in type 1 and 2 discoid menisci (Fig. 1b). Due to its availability, multiplanar capability, and economic benefit, sonography has been used to evaluate meniscal tears in the knee, with an overall accuracy of more than 70%.

The incidence of lateral discoid meniscus is 0.4% to 17% 5, compared to 0.06% to 0.3%for the medial one 6. Twenty percent of DLM are bilateral, whereas bilateral discoid medial meniscus is rare 7. Treatment will depend upon the type of discoid meniscus. Complete and incomplete discoid menisci with no tears are typically treated with saucerization, a procedure in which the meniscus is cut and re-shaped into a crescent. If the discoid meniscus is also torn, the surgeon may perform a saucerization and then trim away the torn portion.
Post-Operative Protocol for Meniscus Surgery. In the case of an isolated meniscus surgery repair, we have patients work on a range of motion from 0-90° for the first two weeks and then increase their knee flexion as tolerated. However, they are non-weight bearing for six weeks.

Discoid menisci are a congenital meniscal variant commonly seen in the lateral compartment, with sporadic reporting of medial cases. It is reported to be present bilateral in up to 20% of patients. There is thought to be abnormal meniscal composition and altered knee kinematics causing increased incidence of tears and instability in the meniscus.
Meniscus injuries are commonly seen in patients with ACL ruptures. Acutely, lateral meniscal tears are more common, but medial meniscal tears are more frequent in patients with chronic ACL deficiency. A discoid meniscus is something some people are born with and it is a meniscus that is circular rather than moon-shaped. A discoid meniscus is vulnerable to tearing but resecting the excessively large fragment of a discoid meniscus does not seem to have any adverse effects as the patient is left with a normal looking moon-shaped meniscus. Discoid Meniscus affecting the medial meniscus (inside of the knee) is extremely rare – estimated at 0.1-0.3% of the population.

Menisci are two crescent-shaped (half moon) discs between the thigh bone (femur) and the leg bone (tibia). They serve as shock absorbers and have several other important functions too. 1. the meniscus may be shaped like a disc instead of a half moon and it is then called a discoid meniscus. Discoid lateral meniscus is an intra‐articular knee disorder that typically presents in children and adolescents.
